JOAH LOVE LLC, local children’s lifestyle clothing brand executes nimble response to the massive shortage of protective masks meant for vulnerable health care workers fighting the COVID-19 crisis by making face masks, is now launching a campaign to help flatten the curve and aid in the normalization of masks by encouraging everyone to participate in the #maskupchallenge
[Los Angeles, CA – April 2nd, 2020] Days before Governor Gavin Newsom issued a state-wide ‘stay at home’ mandate for CA on March 20th, JOAH LOVE founder and designer – Ahyoung Kim Stobar was given the innocent suggestion by her husband to design and create face masks because of the shortage created by panic buying. Initially, the thought was to make enough for family and friends. Ahyoung quickly repurposed resources (ie. fabric) and designed a pattern for an adjustable, washable and ergonomic face mask sized for both adults and children. While many have answered the call, the next step is to spread the message that anything helps. With Mayor Garcetti’s announcement on April 1st that everyone must “Don Your Mask”, we are making progress against the original narrative that face masks for the general public wouldn’t help. I
Being Korean-American, the understanding that face masks, which are widely used in Asia are worn as a courtesy to others when one is sick or to protect oneself from the effects of heavy air pollution. In America, this is a very foreign concept eliciting immediate suspicion. Because of the growing racism towards Asian Americans, the underlying mission is also to help normalize face masks, destigmatize Asian Americans from COVID 19 and help decrease the odds of getting sick in general. With that, @joahlove has launched a campaign for everyone to join in the #maskupchallenge #joahlovemaskup and help stop the spread.
As a small business owner facing financial stress and the inability to pay staff, the side benefit of this new focus could also help her small but mighty team who are producing each mask, one by one since access to factories have been limited. Not meant to be N95 or FDA rated, these type of double enforced cotton masks are now encouraged because of the asymptomatic character COVID 19. Everyone should assume they might have it and by wearing a mask, you’re being courteous by keeping “droplets” to yourself while performing essential errands only. JOAH LOVE has also committed to donating a mask for every mask purchased. Many industries and homemakers have stepped up to their sewing machines and this campaign hopes to weave a common thread through all the positive action.
